The Territory of Alabama’s capital was in St. Stephens, a town in Washington County. St. Stephens was the site of a fort and was chartered as a town in 1807.
The town was the territorial capital of Alabama from 1817-1819. In its heyday around 1818, Old St. Stephens boasted several thousand residents, over 500 homes and 20 stores and commercial buildings.
