Sarah Burton took inspiration for Elle Fanning’s 2025 Oscars dress from Hubert de Givenchy’s first collection.

“I absolutely love this dress,” Fanning told E News on the red carpet. “It’s actually very special. Sarah Burton, who was the designer for Alexander McQueen for a while, is now the designer for Givenchy, but she hasn’t shown a collection yet. So I get to wear...the first Sarah Burton design as designer of Givenchy.”

There is perhaps nobody better suited to usher in Sarah Burton’s new era at Givenchy than Elle Fanning – and no better occasion than the 2025 Oscars. Today, for the 97th Academy Awards, Fanning wears the designer’s first-ever custom haute couture look as creative director of the storied French house.

Elle Fanning brought classic elegance to the Oscars 2025 red carpet on Sunday in Los Angeles. The actress styled a custom haute couture look, with references to the design house’s early 1950s collection.

It could be a toy swan wrapped around your neck (think Björk), a loin cloth and mohawk (hello, Cher), or even a stylist pulling a runway look from the archives.
