Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized since last week, was found to have pneumonia in both lungs following a CT scan on Tuesday, the Vatican said, with tests continuing to indicate “a complex picture” for one of the oldest popes in the church’s history.

The 88-year-old pontiff is in good spirits and is grateful for the prayers for his recovery, the Vatican said.

ROME -- Pope Francis slept well and ate breakfast Wednesday, the Vatican said, after he developed pneumonia in both lungs in a further complication in the condition of the 88-year-old pontiff that raised concerns about his ability to fight off the infection.
