A thrilling 2025 golf season has reached its final major as The Open Championship continues its 153rd playing on Friday at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. The oldest golf tournament in the world is back in Portrush for the first time in six years with the Claret Jug set to be awarded on site Sunday for just the third time in event history.
The "Golden Bear" and 18-time major winner won the first of his three Opens and completed the first of his three career grand slams along the southeastern Scottish coast in 1966, then called the par-71 layout "the best golf course in Britain."
Only one of the 16 past British Open champs playing this year is a two-time winner and he's the one who will hit the first tee shot Thursday.
Perhaps most importantly, the winner of the Open receives the prestigious Claret Jug, into which their name will be etched alongside the tournament's other winners. Champions can keep the Jug for an entire year, but receive a replica to keep forever once their time is up.
On the eve of the British Open, golf fans are getting ready to not sleep in order to wake up and tune into the action at Royal Portrush in the United States. Ge
Xander Schauffele isn't the type of golfer that gains motivation from seeing a trophy in his living room but he still wants the Claret Jug back.
Golf's oldest championship returns to Royal Portrush. It's the third time the British Open has gone to the Northern Ireland links. Shane Lowry won in 2019.
It's a lot of the usual suspects in the British Open power rankings ahead of the final major of the men's golf season for 2025.
