President Donald Trump has slammed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for suggesting that end of Russia’s war against Ukraine is still likely “very, very far away."

Putin, who sent troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, has declared his openness for peace but demanded that Ukraine abandon its bid to join NATO and withdraw its troops from the four regions that Russia illegally annexed in 2022 but never fully captured.

The defense secretary’s instructions, which were given before President Trump’s blowup with the Ukrainian president, are apparently part of an effort to draw Russia into talks on the war.

The defense secretary is said to have halted operations against Russia as part of a reset in ties between Washington and Moscow.
