The Oregon Department of Transportation is apologizing after they found a $1 billion accounting error. ODOT presented the error to the Oregon State Legislature’s Joint Committee on Transportation earlier this week.

ODOT is explaining a one billion dollar budget error. Earlier this week, with the joint committee on transportation, ODOT staff laid out in detail the nature of the error. They explained how the model they used to come up with their 2023-25 budget over-inflated expected federal funds to the tune of one point one billion dollars.

To put the “error” in perspective, a January audit of ODOT pegged the actual damage as $1.1 billion out of a $5.9 billion biennial budget. In other words, the agency expected to have nearly 19% more revenue than it actually generated.
