The EU is prepared to redeploy a monitoring mission to the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt after a ceasefire deal to end Israel's war in the territory, the bloc's top diplomat said Friday.

The Gaza war will be the first item on the agenda during a long-awaited and contentious meeting between Israel and the EU at the end of February, RTÉ News understands.

Israel’s security cabinet has now approved the ceasefire deal with Hamas which will be brought to a vote in the government. The full 33-member cabinet is widely expected to give its approval which means the ceasefire can go into effect on Sunday as planned.
