Paxton, a vocal opponent of LGBTQ rights, issued an opinion Friday declaring court orders to change sex on driver’s licenses and birth certificates "void" and saying altered documents must be changed back.

Eight months after ordering the Texas Department of Public Safety and Department of State Health Services to block transgender Texans from changing the sex on their driver's license to match their gender identity,

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton declared Friday that state court orders to change the sex markers on Texas birth certificates, driver’s licenses and other state-issued IDs are no longer valid.

The Texas Department of Public Safety requested the opinion in September, about a month after it stopped accepting court orders to change gender markers on driver’s licenses. The Department of State Health Services also stopped allowing gender changes on birth certificates unless the hospital made an error.

Per the attorney general’s nonbinding opinion, state agencies should change gender markers on government documents back to a person’s sex assigned at birth.
