The mu coronavirus variant has been detected in 49 states and 42 countries, according to estimates, as health officials keep an eye on the strain to see if it emerges to become more dominant.

Another variant of COVID-19 has reached Dallas County, health officials say. The variant, known as B.1.621, or mu, was added to the World Health Organization’s variants of interest list on Aug. 30.

The mu variant is catching attention as COVID-19 cases are trending up in the U.S. and in many countries worldwide. So far, the variant has been detected in 39 countries.
