That certainly was the case on Thursday night, as Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders slipped all the way out of the first round and became a national story. There were two quarterbacks taken on Day 1 of the draft — Miami’s Cam Ward No. 1 overall by the Tennessee Titans, and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart at No. 25 by the New York Giants.

The Houston Texans opted out of the first round of the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday night, trading their No. 25 pick to the New York Giants instead of selecting a top prospect. But Houston's haul will make them an early focus of Round 2 on Friday.

The Athletic asked 10 coaches and executives Thursday if they were surprised Sanders was still on the board late in Round 1. All 10 said no.
