Tom Cruise spoke publicly about his ex-wife Nicole Kidman to Vanity Fair in 2002, just a year after the former couple’s divorce, and hasn’t said much since. At the time, the magazine asked Cruise why he and Kidman had split, and the “Mission: Impossible” star responded vaguely, insisting twice to the outlet that Kidman “knows why.”

That 2002 interview was the last time that Tom ever talked about Nicole on record — until now. Marking the first time he’s publicly mentioned his ex-wife in over two decades, the Top Gun star recently told the BFI’s Sight and Sound magazine about his “great experience” making Eyes Wide Shut and working with Kubrick shortly before his death in 1999.

Eyes Wide Shut centers on Dr. Bill Harford, who is shocked when his wife, Alice, tells him that she contemplated having an affair the previous summer. He then embarks on a bizarre, night-long odyssey in New York City, during which he infiltrates a masked orgy of a secret society. It was Kubrick’s final film before he died in 1999 at age 70.
